Fast Fashion: What's the True Cost? In our capitalist society, there is a disconnect between the consumer and the product. In the industry of fast fashion, the cost of the garment is only a part of the full price paid. Behind the scenes, we can see the true cost of buying cheap; sweatshops often have poor working conditions, unfair wages, child labor, and unreasonable hours for its workers. As consumers, we are unconsciously supporting unethical and unsustainable practices. Well known companies such as H&M , Forever 21, Zara, Walmart, Adidas, and Victoria’s Secret are just a few  of the major corporations taking advantage of the consumer to make a profit at the cost of humanity. By purchasing products from such companies, we are supporting these practices and only feeding into the inhumane treatment of workers throughout the world. My Response to Society Our system is wrong. Tests on tests on tests on after school activities. Students never get a break. As much as I am appreciative for the education I receive, I 100% do not enjoy one minute of it. Close to 8 hours a day mostly sitting down, trying not to fall asleep, rubbing my eyes and pretending to be paying attention. Basically a test in every class every week, up to 5 hours of homework, strict deadlines, and little time for sleep. Homework is not the only thing I do when I get home, I have plenty other activities I’m doing all of this for the pleasure of getting into college? “All of your hard work will all pay off one day”. Will the hard work pay off before or after I suffer from depression? Will I succeed before or after I deprive myself of the 9 hours of sleep I need to function? Women's Rights are Human Rights I have been raised in a house by liberal and open-minded parents who hear me or my brother out on whatever stance we take. Politics is often at the center of our dinner conversations yet my brother and I are perfect examples of exact opposites when it comes to issues related to politics. We grew up listening to the same dinner table discussions, yet he aligns himself more with conservative beliefs. I, on the other hand,  was drawn to the political party that I thought made human rights a priority. I value social justice over economic policies, therefore I felt welcomed by the ideas of the democratic party because of their support for LGBTQ+ rights, preserving the environment , and universal healthcare. However, the issue I am most impacted by and passionate about is gender equality.
